Health care professionals use a simple calculation called the body mass index (BMI) to determine body weight relative to height. It is defined as the individual's body weight divided by the square of their height. Body mass index may be accurately calculated using any of the formulas below:
SI units: BMI = weight (kg) / height2 (m2)
US units: BMI = 703 x weight (lb) / height2 (in2)
UK units: BMI = 6.35 x weight (stone) / height2 (m2)
Body Mass Index Categories:
- Underweight = Less than 18.5
- Normal weight = Between 18.5 and 24.9
- Overweight = Between 25 and 29.9
- Obese = 30 or greater

In adults, BMI calculation strongly correlates with total body fat content in adults. Overweight is defined as having a body mass index (BMI) between 25 and 29.9. Obesity is defined as having a BMI of 30 or more.
Track Your Child's BMI! If your doctor tells you your BMI is high, don't let it get you down. Instead, talk to your doctor about what you should do to lower your BMI. Unlike adults, kids don't usually need to diet. But by eating healthier and getting more exercise, a kid can improve his or her BMI.
