Gum (periodontal) disease is an infection of the tissues that support your teeth. Your gum tissue is not attached to the teeth as high as it may seem. There is a very shallow v-shaped crevice called a sulcus between the tooth and gums. Periodontal diseases attack just below the gum line in the sulcus, where they cause the attachment of the tooth and its supporting tissues to break down. As the tissues are damaged, the sulcus develops into a pocket: generally, the more severe the disease, the greater the depth of the pocket.

Some factors increase the risk of developing periodontal disease:
**Tobacco smoking or chewing
** Systemic diseases such as diabetes
** Some types of medication such as steroids, some types of anti-epilepsy drugs, cancer therapy drugs, some calcium channel blockers and oral contraceptives
** Bridges that no longer fit properly
** Crooked teeth
** Fillings that have become defective
** Pregnancy or use of oral contraceptives

Several warning signs that can signal a problem:
** Gums that bleed easily
** Red, swollen, tender gums
** Gums that have pulled away from the teeth
** Persistent bad breath or bad taste
** Permanent teeth that are loose or separating
** Any change in the way your teeth fit together when you bite
** Any change in the fit of partial dentures

The Smile Method - How to Avoid Gum Surgery and Dentures (from $4)
The book (ISBN 0-9646271-1-6) by Vasillios Gardiakos

@ You don’t have to lose teeth to periodontal disease. Brush, clean between your teeth, eat a balanced diet, and schedule regular dental visits for a lifetime of healthy smiles.
@ Choose a variety of foods from the basic food groups, such as breads, cereals and other grain products; fruits; vegetables; meat, poultry and fish; and dairy products, such as milk, cheese and yogurt. Limit between-meal snacks.
# Most dental professionals recommend brushing and flossing 10 minutes a day to keep your teeth and gums their healthiest. Unfortunately, nearly 80-percent of Americans don't floss on a regular basis, and most people find flossing to be a painful or unpleasant chore.
@ Clinically proven to be more effective than floss for healthier gums: Waterpik.
@ The electric toothbrush is one of the best things to ever happen to dentistry.
@ The best toothpaste against gingivitis: COLGATE.
@ Kill those germs! Brush or wash using waterpik once a day with Mama Gums' Magic Mix. Recipe:
½ c baking soda + 1 teaspoon salt + peroxide (diluted 50/50) with water
Caution: Use peroxide only 1x per day.
# Dentist no longer support water fluoridation. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long range basis. Water can not be used as a vehicle for drugs.
@ Over 20 years of clinical studies confirm that regular use of xylitol (see lef) helps improve dental health. When used in the mouth, xylitol helps prevent plaque-forming micro-organisms from adhering to your teeth. Rinsing with xylitol-containing mouthwash regularly helps freshen breath and clean the mouth, neutralizing odors and unpleasant taste.
Xylitol is a "tooth friendly" non-fermentable sugar alcohol. 6 – 7 pieces of xylitol gum every day will help cavities away.
# One of the first signs of diabetes is bleeding gums.
